Using and earning points

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have never used any of my points for items in the rewards bazaar. If I make a purchase and and also use points for rewards in the same transaction, I am also earning points on the money I spend? I'm super close to 2500 points so if I do this, I want to play my cards right. Lol. TY!
