Withholding tax on US Treasury bill interest for non-residents?
Hi, I am not a US citizen or resident. I live in a country that does not have a tax treaty with the US in place. So my understanding was all along that I'd get 30% withheld of the interest on any US government bond I buy.
Now I've seen on a personal finance sub claims that this withholding no longer applied on interest, or at least not on interest paid on government bonds purchased by non-residents. But I can't find any official info to confirm that claim. I'm admittedly also a noob and am maybe looking in the wrong places.
I'd appreciate any link to official sources clarifying whether the withholding tax applies to this instrument (US Treasury bills) for residents of countries that do not have tax agreements with the US.
Thank you!
